Liposuction Breast Reduction

Most of our Washington, D.C. area patients describe the discomfort after surgery as mild to moderate, more akin to soreness after a tough workout than sharp pain. Since liposuction doesn’t involve large incisions or the cutting of breast tissue, there’s typically less pain compared to a traditional breast reduction. You’ll be prescribed pain medication to keep you comfortable during the initial healing phase, but many patients switch to over-the-counter meds within a few days. Plus, the tumescent solution used during surgery helps minimize post-op discomfort and bruising.

You’ll start with a comprehensive consultation to determine if you’re a good candidate. After surgery, we’ll see you the very next day, followed by several check-ins over the following weeks to monitor your healing. While every patient is unique, we typically schedule follow-up appointments throughout the year to ensure long-term results are on track.

Most Washington, D.C. area patients experience a noticeable improvement in their appearance, feeling lighter, more comfortable, and more confident in their clothing within the first few weeks, with results continuing to improve as the healing process progresses. Potential risks include temporary numbness, swelling, bruising, asymmetry, or irregular contours. Infection and bleeding are very rare, especially in our AAAASF-accredited surgical suite, where your safety is always our top priority. Serious complications are uncommon, and Dr. Bitar takes every precaution to minimize risk and support your recovery. We’ll also equip you with detailed post-op instructions to ensure everything heals properly.

• General Complications
  General complications can occur with any surgery. Cosmetic surgery is typically a safe procedure performed on healthy patients, and, like all surgeries, it carries a low risk. To lower the risk of complications, we operate at a first-class surgical center with board-certified anesthesiologists and nurses. To avoid postoperative complications, we advocate for early mobilization – patients seen in our office one or two days after surgery- and active participation in their own postoperative care. When we create a partnership, the results invariably improve.

• Bleeding
  Bleeding is rare with any form of liposuction. Before liposuction of the breast, we inject a tumescent solution that constricts the blood vessels and minimizes bleeding. The bleeding from this operation with this technique has been minimal.

• Infection
  Infection with liposuction is rare. The most important step in avoiding infections is to perform the surgery at a first-rate surgical facility with board-certified anesthesiologists and nurses. Patients are given the appropriate intravenous antibiotic coverage throughout the surgery. During the surgery, the patient’s skin surface is cleaned thoroughly. After the procedure, our patients are prescribed antibiotics to minimize infection. As a result of these extra precautions, our rate of infection after a breast reduction by liposuction has been zero.

• Open Wounds
  Since with a breast reduction by liposuction, there is no skin removal or breast tissue manipulation other than suctioning fat out of the breast, open wounds are extremely rare.

• Ability to Breastfeed
  Women are sometimes concerned that if they get a breast reduction, they will not be able to breastfeed afterwards. With liposuction, the breast gland is preserved more than in a standard breast reduction. As a result, the risk of losing the ability to breastfeed is minimal.

• Loss of Nipple Sensation or Nipple / Areolar Skin
  There is a decreased chance of injuring nerves and blood vessels with liposuction because there is no cutting of breast tissue, so the risks of skin loss or permanent nerve injury are rare. Temporary loss of sensation from a “stunned” nerve or a bruised nerve may occur in the time period after surgery, but sensation in the vast majority of cases returns within a few weeks.
