What is a Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty can be an operation that gives a woman an immense feeling of joy and a self-image boost, in my experience. It is a surgery that offers both physical and psychological satisfaction. Usually, women who seek labiaplasty have either enlarged and/or uneven labia minora (inner vaginal lips). In these women, enlarged labia minora can be due to genetics, childbirth, aging, or other factors. Enlarged and uneven labia minora can cause physical discomfort during sex or physical activity, as well as embarrassment in intimate moments. The labiaplasty procedure provides an effective cure to the mentioned problems.

What Are the Benefits of a Labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty can be a deeply personal and empowering procedure—one that’s not just about aesthetics but about comfort, confidence, and reclaiming your sense of ease in your own body. Many women choose labiaplasty to address physical concerns like irritation, pinching, or pain during workouts, sex, or even just while wearing form-fitting clothing.

Others feel self-conscious about how their labia appear, especially if one side is noticeably larger or asymmetrical. This procedure can help alleviate discomfort and create a more balanced, refined appearance. The results often bring a renewed sense of confidence, not just in intimate settings, but in everyday life.

What’s the First Step?

An initial consultation is scheduled, during which we discuss the labiaplasty procedure and determine if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery. Your medical history will be reviewed, and you will be asked to see your medical doctor for a physical check-up and a few laboratory tests to ensure you can undergo the surgery safely. You are asked to stop medications that cause bleeding, such as aspirin or aspirin-like products (Motrin or Ibuprofen), a week before this procedure. You are asked to stop smoking two weeks before and two weeks after surgery, for the surgery to be performed safely, and for you to have optimal results. You are given the opportunity to speak with patients who have undergone the same surgery you are considering. We will see you shortly after the surgery (in a day or two, usually). You are seen regularly after your surgery. You are always welcome to return for a follow-up, even years after your surgery, at no additional charge.

Who Are the Best Candidates For a Labiaplasty?

Ideal candidates for labiaplasty are women who are in the Washington D.C. area and experience physical discomfort, hygiene issues, or self-consciousness due to elongated or uneven labia minora. For some, the shape or size is something they’ve always had; for others, it may have changed over time due to childbirth, aging, or hormonal fluctuations.

If you’re in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and are seeking a lasting solution to physical or emotional discomfort in this area, labiaplasty may be the right option for you. During your consultation at the Bitar Cosmetic Surgery Institute, we’ll review your health history, talk through your concerns, and determine if this is the right step forward.

What to Expect on the Day of Labiaplasty Surgery

The size and shapes of labia vary tremendously between different women. The procedure can be done either in the office under local anesthesia or in the hospital with local anesthesia, sedation, or general anesthesia. When the patient is relaxed and the labia minora are anesthetized, the excess skin is removed, leaving the best possible symmetry between the two sides. The incisions are closed with absorbable sutures, so sutures do not need to be removed. Sitz baths are recommended after the surgery and follow-up in the office within the next few days.

Labiaplasty Recovery

Our office will provide a comprehensive post-operative plan to ensure the best possible outcome. The plan will outline what to expect postoperatively, including estimated recovery time, pain management, garments or dressings, and anticipated activity level. For your safety, we require that an adult stay with you at least the first 24 hours after surgery and drive you to your next day follow-up visit. With most procedures, you will be instructed to limit activity for the first week or two, which could include restrictions on driving, prolonged travel, and flying. Additionally, we recommend that you refrain from exercise until cleared by your physician, typically around four weeks post-surgery. You are asked to refrain from smoking for a minimum of two weeks. To optimize healing, we recommend that you eat a high-protein diet. You should anticipate a variable degree of bruising and swelling, as with any surgical procedure. We also offer scar creams at an additional cost to optimize results.

To promote healing and minimize complications, you will be seen in a series of post-op appointments, including the day after surgery. These appointments will continue throughout the first year after the procedure to make sure you are healing as planned. For your added convenience, you also have direct access to Dr. Bitar’s cell phone number, should you need to reach him outside of office hours. The final post-operative visit, one year after surgery, is one of our favorites, as the results are fully apparent, and we love seeing our patients happy. You are always welcome to return and visit us, even years after your surgery.
